SERTS™

EOIR has developed an audio and video recording system called SERTS (Safety Evaluation Range Training System) that allows several capabilities for instructors to instruct, review, and qualify trainees. Instructors can watch tank and Bradley Fighting Vehicle training from the inside as well as the outside of the vehicle. Small cameras and audio devices are placed within the vehicle in a manner that will not interfere with the training exercises.

The system is designed to:

Provide realistic live ranges for qualification of digitized forces
The system doesn't interfere with traditional training, and allows more remote observation for instructors.

Provide enhanced training data collection for After Action Reviews (AAR)
As many as five real-time video feeds and audio can be turned on from an observation tower and recorded for later review. EOIR also has the ability to deliver all of the AAR equipment. All audio and video from exercise runs are digitally recorded on hard drive recorders and can be remotely played back from an AAR complex, for virtually instant post exercise reviews. The AAR system also includes a means of providing a take home CD package of the evaluator's critique, complete with comments to serve as recurring training at the soldiers' home commands.

System Capabilities

  • Integrate with other live, virtual and constructive training events
  • Utilize interfaces compliant with the Common Training Instrumentation Architecture
  • Use advanced targetry to represent realistic threats and reactions
  • Stimulate digitized force systems

The system consists of three parts:

Vehicle Transmitter System
The Vehicle Transmitter System works by capturing video directly from each crew cabin and crew gunner's sight, along with crew cabin audio.

The three crew cabin views are multiplexed, then sent with crew cabin audio to the Range Officer in the tower.

Tower Monitoring Station
At the same time, a state-of-the-art 3rd GEN FLIR mounted in the Tower scans the entire range, providing high-resolution surveillance, day or night.

These views displayed on a bank of monitors in the Tower to provide the Range Officer a comprehensive view of each crew's position, tactics, and procedures.

After Action Review System
The After Action Review Facility enables the Range Officer to immediately replay the entire exercise or specific excerpts, adding his own comments directly to the recording.

The resulting after-action CD-ROM provides a comprehensive and lasting training tool that can sustain troops, and train new troops before they engage in costly range operations.
