The ALS software suite was designed to allow basic computer users to develop interactive, user-based training packages from PowerPoint or other Office documents. Students who participate in an ALS based lesson can be presented with many different types of tests such as fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice. Students who pass the tests will move on to the next lesson while students who fail can go back and be given additional instruction before trying to take the test again.

Tests can also be converted for use on the Internet through standard Java-based web browsers.
